Mustard Seed

Come to the Garden

Come to the garden

Come to the pool

Come be the face behind the mask

Be my April fool

Come to the window

Look through the pain

Come be the one who's been there all along

Ever since time began

And long past its ending

Come to the garden,

Come be my friend

Come be the eyes inside the glass

Be the sun and the wind

Come in the evening

Whistling a tune

Come be the voice inside the frost

On the windows of my room

Come to the garden

Come be my freedom

Come be my innocence

My ocean, my drum

Just come...

All of These Girls

All of these girls inside my house

All of these girls who live with me

One of them is hanging out her upstairs bedroom window

Combing her hair and just waving like an Amsterdam whore

One of them is downstairs up to her elbows in dish soap

Folding the laundry or furiously sweeping the floor

All of these girls inside my house

All of these girls who live with me

One of them is buttoned up and smiling, charming as a school marm

One of them can't remember her own damned name

One of them is working so hard to never be forgotten

But she knows she's drowning in obscurity just the same

All of these girls...

Once there was a girl with a very nice curl

Right in the middle of her forehead

When she was good she was very very good

And then she was bad

First you saw me hanging out the upstairs window

But I met you at the door with a broomstick and a sharp remark

So you snuck in through the basement

And you took me for all I had

And I gave it to you willingly down there in the dark

All of these girls inside my house

All of these girls who live in me

All of these girls inside my house

All of these girls who live inside of me

Outback Angels

In a very small Alaskan town

These two good friends met, barely in their twenties

One moved on, one settled down

Raised up a passel of kids, giving them plenty

And they dropped a line every couple of years

And then twenty-five years go by

Just a couple of women in their fifties now

And they're going out for a ride

From San Diego to Portland

Up to the northlands again

Back to Alaska, they'll hot flash ya

Outback Angels out for a ride

In a very small Alaskan junction

They pulled off the road, tired and hungry

After all those years of trying to function

In motherhood and marriage, part of a community

But tonight it's just the two of you, out on the wild frontier

Just a couple of women of a certain age

And look out, they're out of here

Couple of good friends, couple of women

Just out driving, talking, laughing, grinning

Outback Angels out for a ride

Outback Angels out for a ride

In a very small time it seems

This trip was over, back to reality

A new day dawns, it's the end of dreams

Call in your angels, get you through the tragedy

Your angels, they come from far and wide

Circling around you

Oh the road is hard, but love is long

And we're only passing through

From San Diego to Portland

Back to the northlands again

Back to Alaska, carrying ashes this time

Outback Angels out for a ride

Outback Angels out for a ride

A New Day

A new day, a new song

Another chance to sing along

With that voice I've known all along

A new day, a new song

A new day, a new thought

Another chance to perceive my lot

From a place where I can be taught

A new day, a new thought

I been thinking so long I forgot it was a habit

I wore out my mind just like the Velveteen Rabbit

I got nothing to say that hasn't been said

So I think I might just go on back to bed

A new day a new now

Another chance to chase the sacred cow

I don't know when and I don't know how

But it's a new day with a brand new now

I been sinking so long, it was just a habit

I wore out my time like the Velveteen Rabbit

I got nothing to say anyone wants to hear

So I think I might just have another beer

A new day, a new song

Another chance to sing along

With that voice you've known all along

A new day, a new song

I Like You

I like you, you like me

What can be so hard, what can be so wrong about that?

What can be so wrong, what can be so hard about that?

You want me, I want you

What can be so weird, what can be so strange about that?

What can be so strange, what's so complicated about that?

What's so complicated?

Why are we so dumb?

Why we got to play this game called Under My Thumb?

Can I be who I always wanted to be?

You be the you that sets you free

And I'll choose you and you choose me

I choose you and you choose me

I love you, you love me

How can it go on? How can love be strong like that?

How can love be strong? How can it go on like that?

(I don't know, but it does

It just does

It's got a mind of its own)

Lone Ranger

High in the mountains girl or down by the sea

First person narrative that's the life for me

Cuz I'm the Lone Ranger

I'm the Lone Ranger

Into the sunset or an ivory tower

Hair by hair and hour by hour

Hey stranger, what do you see?

Me in my crazy shoes, bald and blind as I can be

But who do you wanna be?

Who do you wanna be?

Action figure, picture perfect hero girl?

Everybody's favorite in the whole wide world?

Oh please--

Who do you wanna be?

Out on the tundra, babe, or down in the bar

Chilliwack to Haines, girl, you know who you are

You're the Lone Ranger, the Lone Ranger

Constant stranger, you and your guitar

But who do you wanna be?

Who do you wanna be?

Perfectly flawed?

Dumbstruck and awed by Thee?

Who do you wanna be?

Stethoscope

Ever since I came to earth

I've wanted to go home

They told me I was made of dirt

They said I was alone

But I knew better

I began to play along

What else could I do?

I was weak and they were strong

And they made all the rules

So I pretended

But I dream a giant stethoscope

And I point it into the air

And I listen into the sky in hopes

That someday it will be there

A message from a distant star

The beating of a different heart

I fell into the strangest dream

A journey through the years

A truly began to believe

All their awful fears

Yes, I surrendered

Fall like a meteor

You're burning your way across the sky

Finally hit the earth

Your light is gone and you don't know why

You forgot everything

You came to this world to do

You're looking for the truth, its right there inside of you

Ever since I came to earth

I've been so confused

Finally I know my worth

And I get to choose

Fall like a meteor

You're burning your way across the sky

Finally hit the earth

Your light is gone and you don't know why

You forgot everything

You came to this world to start

You're looking for the truth, its right there inside your heart

Witchfire

I remember the day the witchfire was born

I could see the smoke, I could feel the storm

It was heading west, so I did not run

It was a blazing billow of flame by the morning sun

But now it's gone, it's all gone

Just a little cabin on a mountainside

I swear the bluebirds congregated there

     singing side by side

And we were happy, at least we were getting along

Right up until the day I heard that witch's song

And now its gone, all gone

Well its gone, just like everything sooner or later

It's gone, just like everything sooner or later

It's gone

I remember the day I first heard your name

I could smell the smoke, I could feel the flame

Oh but I was hungry, so I did not run

I signed up for the part of Joan of Arc

And it was fun, but now it's gone...

Malibu

I knew that's where you would be

It's just a matter of chemistry

Never quite right for you and me

Sure do love you, though

Sure do love you

But we'll play music someday,

Yeh, we'll play music

Your hair will be all gone, Malibu

And mine'll be grey

Maybe by then my friend

I'll know how to sing,

Really sing, yeh really sing

And you can play

Yeh, you can really play

I knew that's where you would be

I suppose it's just security

We're much too fragile you and me

Sure do love you though, sure do love you

Pay the rent and still be free

But we'll play music someday

Yeh, we'll play music

Your hair will be all gone, Malibu

And mine'll be grey

Maybe by then my friend

I'll know how to sing,

Really sing, yeh really sing

And you can play

Yeh, you can really play

Yodileehoo

Yodileehoo my baby

Yodileehoo my day

Dance around me baby

Like it was a holiday, a holiday

Oh my babe

Yodileehoo I'm staying

Yodileehoo 'til the band plays

I'm gonna dance around you baby

Like it was a holiday, a holiday

Woah my my babe

Well I danced all around it in my little brown shoes

I was dancing all the way home from school

Singing my songs while I crossed the tracks

And nobody knew I was cool

Yodileehoo my baby

Yodileehoo my day

Dance around the corner

Because this is a holiday, a holiday

Oh my babe

It's a holy day, holiday

Hey...

(Babe)

Mustard Seed

I've got lots to do today but somehow the mood escapes me

And all the thoughts that used to save me have all gone their way

Follow, you must now, it's springtime

Time for hearts to sing

Follow, and trust now, the Kingdom

is waiting to give birth to wings

Inside a Mustard Seed waits the grandest of trees

If you had eyes to see this dustbowl would become a garden

In my dreams there was a man

Through dark streets he seemed to chase me

By the river there was safety

But I chose to walk alone

He followed, me singing,

His footsteps like bells through empty alleys rang

Followed me clinging,  like music how silent in the air it hangs

You were born to sing, child sing

Dance, and paint out your dreams

And it is time to do these things

It's time to bring the earth to Heaven

And then Jesus said to them

You are seeds that do await me

Many lifetimes you've escaped me, afraid to die in vain

But follow, leave your nets now and forget now

A life that was wreathed in blood and thorns

Follow, leave your dead now, skin is shed now

And only then are hearts reborn

Out of a Mustard Seed grows the grandest of trees

That for a while will be

Shelter for every bird in heaven

Matriarchy/Birds

Mama never believed in angels

Silent at the end of the Apostle's Creed

Oh that smiling rebel

An artist, she pardoned the love of the wild geese in me

Clay beneath her fingers

Birdbooks in hand

Gold and diamond her ring

Dorothy, she surely knew her horses

She raised them and tamed them and sang them to sleep

Oh that shining angel

She was a nightingale singing us into the deep

Stories of the southern night minstrel shows

Song of the raggle-taggle gypsies oh

Oh lord how we loved her so

Ivories beneath her fingers

Gold and ruby her ring

I took off from the nest just like a goose in a headwind

I was silly and so misinformed

I was misunderstood, I was Miss Disconnected

I was wishing I could go back and get reborn

I was wishing i could just be reborn

Mama never believed in angels

Silent at the end of the Apostle's Creed

Oh that grinning rebel

An artist, she pardoned the love of the wild geese in me

Clay beneath her fingers

Birdbooks in hand

Gold and diamond her ring

Mama never believed
